I've been concerned about some of the lumpy cards I've been packing in OWH boxes to go to our military in Iraq and Afghanistan. My concern grew last week when I got an empty envelope from one of my contacts in Iraq. Where was the card? Probably lost in some mail machine.
At my "card hospital" I remove lumpy and sharp objects attached to cards. I've devised lots of solutions to repair the cards, and I found a great one for the fat button problem!
This punch is made by Marvy Uchida, and it punches three embossed buttons. Typically, I glue two or three together with Aleene's Super Thick Tacky Glue to give them a bit of sturdiness. That makes them a bit thicker too, but not nearly as thick as a button.
This card also meets the requirements for the Stars and Stamps Blog Challenge #25. I used Basic Grey patterned paper and Bazzill card stock. Here's the sketch:
EDIT: Most cards I get for OWH are not too lumpy. Probably one or two out of every 100 need to be flattened a bit.
Sherry H. emailed and said she'd found the Marvy punch at www.paperwishes.com. Thanks, Sherry!!

What a great alternative to bulky buttons! Is that a new punch? I think I might need one.
ReplyDeleteYour card is just great, and I guess when we embellish cards, we don't think of how those cards will be punished while going through the mail system. I've already altered the way I use ribbon on my cards, and although I don't use buttons all that often, I'll rethink the whole process! Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteShould we stop using bows and bling altogether? I can certainly do it, but it's going to be a hard habit to break!
ReplyDeleteWonderful interpretation of this week's challenge. Also an excellent tip. Is there a way you can post this tip and example on OWH's facebook page and blog for the newcomers who may not be following you just yet? Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteLove the paper on this.. Really nice card!!
ReplyDeleteVery nice card Dixie! Thanks for the reminder about keeping the bulky stuff to a minimum AND making sure if we DO use it we seriously glue it down. I have a Martha Stewart "button punch" but I think I like yours even better.
ReplyDeleteThis whole dilemma sounds like a good reason for me to go shopping!!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like we are all wondering the same thing (after I just attached 3 brads to a card that resemble the heads of screws). How about our shipper giving us some more specific directions for embellishments.
ReplyDeleteDixie something you said kinda' disturbs me..."at my card hospital I remove lumpy and sharp objects"...wow I have a guilty obsession with stacked buttons but I didn't realize cards were getting doctored (so to speak)in the hospital...that kinda takes the air out of my balloon to make the cards to know they will be altered -sorry just being honest.
ReplyDeleteRather, I have come up with a way to make a virtually indestructible-cardstock-pocket envelope with very strong adhesive that will accommodate these lumpy cards - I don't do sharp objects just lumpy -this envelope also states on the front "embellished card-requires special handling" I even took it to the PO and they gave it the OK! my question is if I send these envelopes will my cards be left as is?
I wouls really like to hear the answer to everyone's concerns as I have started to make cards as well. Please respond!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip Dixie! I like to put on buttons but I'm always afraid of the "bulky factor" so I stay away from the most of the time. I just need to find that punch and I can have tons of fun without the bulk!
ReplyDeleteVery nice. I think that company is about to have a run on punches!
ReplyDeleteLove this button look, TFS the great punch. TFS
