Selective Embossing

This card is for Operation Write Home's VCMP challenge #3, Selective Embossing. I'd tried this technique before without success. Looking through some of the examples posted, I realized I needed to use a busy, graphic embossing folder with a rectangle for the "opening" of the embossing. I had my "ahh-ha" moment when I studied Lynn's card HERE

Defining the flat area with dashed lines made the focal image more crisp.

Sizzix - embossing folder
Simon Says Stamp - Talk Bubbles 2
Hero Arts - mid tone inks, Pale Tomato and Raspberry Jam
Versafine Onyx Black ink

  1. Dixie, you are such a good student that it makes you an even better teacher! Now that you figured out the secret, I've learned it from you and will go back and try my selective embossing again. My first two attempts that I posted for the VCMP challenge were utter failures in my opinion. The dotted lines around your rectangle really helped a lot!

  3. I bow down to you! I had some struggles with my first few attempts and finally figured it out, although I'm not really thrilled with my card. You're right, the black outline really does make the flat part pop. Nice job, as always!

  4. This came out great Dixie! I struggled with this one but now with your tips I will give it another try because it's a great technique when you want a CAS design. I need to master how to create a perfect sandwich so I don't break anything. LOL.

  5. Dixie, your card is stunning! Thank you for the mention it gave me little goose bumps. :) I do like the dashed line to define to focal point. Now that I look at mine it looks a bit bare. :( I will have to try this one again.

  6. Dixie, go back to the A Cut Above class Day 6 and watch how Jennifer McGuire did her embossing with the diffuser. She did the whole thing then went back with the negative piece and emphasized the unembossed part. Then she used a scoring tool to go around the flat part.
Your card is beautiful. I love that embossing folder and the lines really add to it.

  7. You did a great job with this! Every time I've tried it, it just looks like a mistake, all fuzzy around the edges of the embossing.

  9. This is AH-MAZING! I gave up on the technique and was ready to just use my Tim Holtz diffusers, but now I really want to get it to work. LOVE the stitched outline you did, too.
