August 16, 1997 - January 6, 2010
Today I said goodbye to my best friend, Jake. When he was little, I was afraid he would think his name was "Good Dog" because he heard it so much. He was a good dog, the very best. The lean, mean, fetching machine slowed down over the years, but he never lost the desire to play with a ball or a stick. He'll be missed around here for a long time.
Jake was my dad's dog first, given to him by my oldest brother for Dad's 75th birthday. Jake was what he was because of Dad. Tricks were learned and practiced in the basement on cold, rainy days and in the yard on nice days. Dad liked to load him in the truck for a visit to the hardware, or he'd load him in the gator to supervise the construction of 485. They were the best of buddies.
Jake's care fell to me on January 14, 2007.
Howling because he could.
Christmas 2009.
He was such a good sport to wear whatever nonsense I put on him.
He made the best subject for Christmas cards.
I want to thank Dr. Sain and all the terrific people at University Animal Clinic in Harrisburg for their wonderful care of Jake over the years. Dad picked them for Jake's care from the beginning because their office was close to home. It was the right choice. Jake loved them all and was loved by them all.
Goodbye, Jakey. Love you.
I know that saying goodbye to a pet who is also family member is so hard. I'm so sorry you had to do it but I'm sure Jake and your dad are playing catch with a stick or a ball once again.
ReplyDeleteSaying goodbye to your beloved pet is one of the hardest things to do. So sorry to hear of this, Dixie.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry - it's hard to say goodbye to a pet - my parents had to say goodbye to their 16 year old chocolate lab this past summer.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how much of our hearts they get just from being our pet.
My heart breaks for you because I know what you're feeling right now. It's so hard to lose such a dear family member after so many years. Big hugs to you for your loss.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog - I plan to send another box of cards as soon as I fill one up. I'm feeling so good about doing this. I'll check back again and see what you're up to :)
Hugs, Carol
Dixie, Very sorry to hear about your dog. We lost our dog, Smokey, of 14 years in October. It broke my heart, but I know he is romping around in heaven with my mother-in-law. Debbie
ReplyDeleteDixie, I hope that the fond memories of
ReplyDeletegood times with Jake will help mend your heart.
My heart goes out to you.
Dixie, I already treasured my Christmas card. Now it is even more special. I am thinking of you! Jake was a beautiful boy. If you
ReplyDeletewant my goddog, Lily to visit you, she looks a lot like him, she is not a good dog as Jake was... but very lovable.
I'm also really really impressed with your cards! I wish I had that talent. It looks so fun. Mine would be the cards that "need attention." Thanks for doing this really cool deed for our troops! Where can I send a card to Soldier Sam?
Yers, Beth
