My first shipment for Operation Write Home went to the Post Office in Harrisburg, NC yesterday. I think the lady at the Post Office was a little surprised when she saw me coming with the hand trucks loaded with seven boxes. I know she was relieved that I had all my custom forms completed and ready to go. It was a quick, painless experience. I hope it always goes so smoothly.
Here's a brief lesson in the anatomy of an OWH box. Cards are packed tightly and labeled by sections. With 6 of the 7 boxes, I've packed Valentine, love, miss you, thinking of you, anniversary, child's birthday, birthday, and all occasion cards. One box, sent to a USO in Iraq, was ALL Valentines.
Since there's some airspace at the top of the box, I added some more Valentines and a few oversized cards. Aren't they pretty!
In a bag marked "Hero Mail" I put a nice variety of letters and notes written for our heroes by card makers and children. One of our card makers sent a couple boxes of Sharpies for shipment. Thanks, Andrea M. from Ithaca, NY! So clever!
Finally, I put a couple of flyers for OWH and a card for the recipient in the box. Now it's ready for addressing and taping.
I loaded the boxes, and when I reopened the back of the car to take a picture, the neighbors' dog thought he was supposed to go with me to the PO. Silly dog.
You should start letting the Beast ride with you! He could be the OWH East coast mascot.
ReplyDeleteGood idea, Wendy.
ReplyDeletegood job!!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi - I just came across you blog. Thanks for the shout out for the sharpies. :-) I saw the OWH blog post where they said thanks for the sharpies in their message I wondered if those were from your box but I couldn't remember if I sent those to you or in my first box to Fabre! I made 50 cards this weekend and plan on making another handful to have a box ready to ship Monday to you. Thanks for all of your work!
