Feed the Birds

I love feeding the birds. As a teen, I remember sitting at the kitchen table, looking out the front window at the bird feeder my dad tended. We liked to count the cardinals jockeying for a place on the feeder and the fat doves lumbering on the ground for whatever fell from the feeder.

This first feeder is one of my dad's. I hung it right in front of my kitchen window so I can watch when I'm at the sink. The fun part of this is watching the squirrels try to find a way to the food. They jump from the window ledge to the feeder and send it swinging. This does rattle some food to the ground for them to forage, but they can't get to the feeder itself. Pesky squirrels!

The feeder system pictured below, I started a couple of years ago, and I've been adding things to it along the way. I call it my "bird food court." When I first put it in the ground, it was nice and straight, but it's been listing to port of late. I need to replant it, but the birds don't seem to mind.

The woodpeckers love the Birdacious Bark Butter I spread on the cedar feeder. I call it "crack" for birds because it's hard to keep enough Bark Butter on there!

I strategically placed this collection of feeders so I can watch from my crafty/work space. It's a good distraction!

Edit: Jim's Birdacious Bark Butter can be purchased at Wild Birds Unlimited. It contains rendered beef suet, roasted peanuts, peanut oil, corn, and calcium carbonate.

There's a new product, Jim's Birdacious Bugberry Blend Bark Butter. It has the same ingredients as the original plus raisins, roasted mealworms, cranberries, apples, and cherries.

  6. I love watching the birds and taking pictures of them too. The cardinals are so beautiful all the time, but especially when it is snowy or icy.
